31 Day Horror Challenge: 7. Clay/Animation – The Halloween Tree

Recently, I was on a friend’s podcast, and we spoke briefly about an old October tradition my mom and I had. You see, there was a video store in the Kroger in my hometown, so we would rent Elvira, Mistress of the Dark and The Halloween Tree from the video store, and we would grab a pack of these giant sugar cookies with Halloween scenes delicately and intricately created from icing on the front from the bakery.

We would spend the night snuggled up on the couch with our double feature, our milk, and our cookies, laughing and talking, surrounded by pumpkins and cutouts, just enjoying the season together. As I got older, the video store would close, and my weekends home would be fewer and further between as I joined band, my friends got their licenses, I moved to Austin, and eventually, I got a job and an apartment of my own. Throughout everything, there are two things that haven’t changed: my love for Halloween and my love for my mother.

If it wasn’t for KP, I wouldn’t have the love of this season or the confidence to have the love of this season. I wouldn’t take hours to decorate. I wouldn’t love horror movies and pumpkin ice cream. I wouldn’t be here, writing this little blog post without her.

Thanks Ma, for everything. 🖤
