Love is Spell

I love Practical Magic; that’s common knowledge. It’s easily one of my favorite movies, and it’s probably not for any of the reasons you may think. Sure, I light candles and sage my apartment and read my tarot cards. I believe in gut feelings and bad vibes. I think everyone has a little magic in them, whether or not they’re willing to admit it.

But I love Practical Magic for an entirely different reason. I think it portrays love in its most powerful form. On the one hand, it shows how intoxicating and cruel and venomous love can be (Jimmy deserved every single thing he got), but it also shows how spellbinding and enchanting and otherworldly (sometimes in the literal sense) love can be. You see, to me, love is the purist magic of all. The most potent of incantation. The greatest charm. The ficklest type of sorcery.

It can’t be conjured out of thin air. You can’t mix herbs as a quick cure for a broken heart or easy relationship (only thyme can give you that). Binding your heart is often times much easier than casting it out without knowing the future.

Love is the idea of jumping off the roof on Halloween night. It’s the idea of throwing your intention out into the wind and waiting to see what comes to you. It’s sometimes feeling cursed and crying and having to initiate the phone tree to get through the exceptionally bad times.

It may come in the form of friendship or  kinship or relationships. In the worst of times, it can be like a hex you can’t get rid of. In the best of times, it’s a dynamic glamour you can’t get rid of. Most of the time, you usually can’t control when that apprehension appears, but you have to learn to craft your emotions to make sure you land firmly on the ground with your black umbrella.

Even though it’s hard to be clairvoyant when it comes to love, the entire concept will always [blessed] be completely magical to me. And I don’t need a spell to make me believe that.
