I’m obviously a horror buff, through-and-through. I grew up with the likes of Eerie, Indiana and Goosebumps. I spent my summers on Fear Street and with Christopher Pike. I even made sure that our TV lived AMC FearFest for its entire run. That’s why Halloween 4 and Halloween 5 have such a special place in my heart. You see, AMC FearFest ran marathons of all of the popular franchises as well as some Stephen King favorites, but for some reason, they LOVED Halloweens 4 and 5. I can’t tell you how many times they would air during the Halloween season.
I’d watch them after school, on the weekends, and honestly, late at night when I should’ve been asleep. There are parts of these movies I can quote. Outside of Halloween 6, which we don’t talk about, I love every single one of the movies in the Halloween franchise, including Rob Zombie’s Halloween and Halloween II, but Halloweens 4 & 5 just hit differently. Don’t get me wrong – my favorite will always be Halloween ’78, but these two are special.
I can smell my mom making sloppy joes when I watch them. I can hear my sister talking on the phone in her bedroom. I can feel that cool, autumn air on my face. They remind me of getting ready my band uniform on and packing for a football game. They’re completely interwoven with my nostalgia, and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to unravel the connection.
