31 Day Horror Challenge: 6. Games Gone Wrong – Open Graves

Open Graves is essentially 2009 personified. And, that’s important to remember as you watch it. Within the first five minutes, we have a graphic close up of someone getting their fingernail ripped off with pliers, surfer B-roll, and misogyny.

If you aren’t familiar with this particular little flick, Open Graves stars Mike Vogel and Eliza Dushku because it’s 2009, so of course it does. After finding one of the creepiest looking board games of all time, Mike, Eliza, and all their friends decide to play a round. Spoiler: the board game is cursed, and all of the cards they draw foreshadow their inevitable, gruesome deaths. (The only thing more horrifying is the amount of puka shell necklaces wardrobe threw in to remind us it was, indeed, 2009).

Open Graves is one of those mindless movies you can pop on when you’re just looking for a distraction. In my humble opinion, it pairs nicely with pizza and your beverage of choice. I’d be remiss if I didn’t give one of my trademark disclaimers. There are some jokes and material that aren’t okay, and it’s better to know that going in. It also just isn’t a good movie (think if Final Destination took place in the same universe as Into the Blue). But, if you’re feeling nostalgic and/or want to see how far we’ve come in the horror genre, Open Graves is the movie for you.
