31 Day Horror Challenge: 13. Gratuitous Graveyards – One Dark Night

One Dark Night is like a mix of the final act of The Craft sans the group being witches,  Phantasm, and the gooey-ness of Prince of Darkness but with really cool jackets and complete that quintessential, easily-80s, funky orchestral soundtrack. This was another first time watch for me, and I dug it! (Pun intended)

One Dark Night serves as a cautionary tale regarding initiations because apparently, if you try to harshly haze someone because they’re dating your ex-boyfriend, a mausoleum full of fake skeletons and props will hunt you down and kill you all. Oh yeah, and if your dad was telekinetic AND evil, you should probably just cut your losses and trim off that part of the family tree.

This is a movie I would sincerely love to see get the Karyn Kusama/Diablo Cody treatment because I think that this movie would pack a better punch with a more Jennifer’s Body approach to horror, especially when it comes to bad girls Kitty and Carol and making Julie more of a badass.

One Dark Night is a movie I think would be better suited for a group setting a la movie night or even Terror Tuesday, but if that isn’t an option, I would recommend it as the appetizer of a movie night to be paired with something like the Slumber Party Massacres or House on Sorority Row and Sorority Row. Either way, if you’re in the mood for a movie that seems to have a commercial for an 80s arcade in the center, this one’s for you.

One Dark Night is now streaming on Shudder.
