While it’s been sitting my queue for a hot minute, I sincerely didn’t know what to expect from Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight because I had avoided reading anything about it. I am happy to announce I am absolutely smitten with this little gem. Part comedy, part horror, and wholly entertaining, this little treat gives us a camp slasher that watches like a mix of Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, The Hills Have Eyes Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and oddly enough, in brief interludes, like an Ari Aster directed Wet Hot American Summer. Therefore, my second dive into Polish horror (the first being The Lure, which I love) made for a delightful swim.
Nobody Sleeps in the Woods tonight focuses on a group of technology addicted teens who are sent to a specialized camp to help them kick their electronic addiction. Naturally, a set of twins turned alien-made violent killers (yes, you read that correctly) are released from a basement, and, well, let’s just say cell phone batteries aren’t the only dead things around.
I’m actually really looking forward to the upcoming sequel because its predecessor is just so much fun. We find our Randy Meeks in Julek, who is obsessed with horror movies, our Sidney Prescott in Zosia, who has suffered terrible tragedy, and our more advance meta humor back in Scream, but you get the picture. Mannequin heads are flying about and so are the movie references. If you’re a fan of the self-aware slasher that still knows how to have a good time, definitely check this one out.
Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight is now available to stream on Netflix, and Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight 2 streams on Netflix beginning October 27.
