Some cinematic teenagers spend their adolescence dancing and singing through the hallways; others accidentally murder someone around them and take vows of silence. Today is October 2, we’re clearly discussing the latter. I present to you five offerings of teenybopper crime that are riddled with guilt, revenge, and in some cases, resurrection. No bones about it, these troubled teens would kill to have their sins from the past stay buried, but that, unfortunately, isn’t always an option
1. Stitches: After Stitches the Clown is accidentally and gruesomely murdered by the children at Tom’s birthday party by being tripped and falling atop the largest knife I’ve ever scene, placed right-side up, in an open dishwasher, he seeks revenge six years later when Tom and co finally throw another party. The kills in this movie are truly insane (one involves an ice cream scoop), and the lore surrounding the clown creed is actually very, very cool. I watched this movie my senior year of high school when I caught Swine Flu, and I’ve been a fan since.
Stitches is now available to stream on Amazon Prime and Shudder.
2. I Know What You Did Last Summer: This one is a given. Four friends accidentally run down someone on the road and abandon them, but you better believe they later begin to hunt all of them down. You have Jennifer Love Hewitt wading through fake ice cubes made of Jell-O. You have a Kevin Williamson screenplay. You even have the opportunity to get “Summer Breeze” stuck in your head. It’s the epitome of the late 90s slasher adaptation, and quite frankly, it’s the reason I’m skeptical of anyone in a raincoat.
I Know What You Did Last Summer is available to stream on Peacock.
3. Jawbreaker: Where do I even start? This movie is iconic, and if you haven’t seen it by now, I highly suggest you clear your entire schedule for the night to watch it. For those who don’t know, the premise is centered around three friends who decide to kidnap their friend for a birthday surprise and open the trunk to find she’s choked and suffocated on the large jawbreaker they jammed in her mouth as a gag. Incredible outfits, a bitchin’ soundtrack, and blackmail ensue. Sincerely don’t pay attention to the Rotten Tomatoes score on this movie.
Jawbreaker is currently streaming on Pluto TV.
4. Tamara: I will never be able to fully articulate why I enjoy this movie so much. An unpopular girl is ridiculed by her peers, and, you guessed it, is accidentally murdered in a prank gone wrong. However, she doesn’t stay dead for long and comes back “hot” and ready to seek revenge on all those who wronged her. Much like The Rage: Carrie 2, you’ll find yourself slightly rooting for Tamara.
Tamara is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
5. Prom Night: There are so many things to love about this movie, from the killer wearing a SHINY ski mask to the scene where Jamie Lee Curtis and Casey Stevens perform a full-length choreographed disco number. Just a word of advice though: If you’re going to torment your younger sister with the wildest game of hide and seek I’ve ever witnessed, make sure she doesn’t accidentally fall out of a dilapidated window in a condemned building.
Prom Night is currently streaming on Shudder.
Honorable Mention: I feel like I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t mention Sometimes They Come Back and Sometimes They Come Back…Again. I loved these movies growing up, but the third one is dead to me. The storyline is a little reverse with this one because the bad guys get killed and come back to, you know, keep being bad guys, but they’re still a whole lot of fun, and I definitely recommend the Stephen King story the franchise is based off of as well.
Sometimes They Come Back is available for streaming on Pluto TV, and Sometimes They Come Back…Again is available for streaming on Tubi.
