31 Day Horror Challenge: 28. Poor Teens – Tamara

I’m a sucker for a good teen scream, so it should come as no surprise that I really dig Tamara. It’s part Carrie, part Little Witches, and full cheese. There’s honestly some brutal stuff thrown in here, and some of the effects are questionable at best, but I love it all. Today, I’ve decided to give you all some of my favorite, lesser known/cult teen screams in the spirit (pun intended) of Tamara to binge on this, the unholiest of weeks.

May (2002)- May is so great for so many reasons. The soundtrack is INCREDIBLE. Angela Bettis is always an absolute treat, as is Anna Faris. There’s just something grotesquely charming about the movie itself. It may not have teens, but I can assure you there are plenty of screams.

The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999): I don’t care what anyone says; this movie is a great movie. The ties to Carrie are solid. It has a great selection of who’s who teen stars, including Rachel Blanchard and Mena Suvari. Emily Bergl also plays Francie on Gilmore Girls, showing she has versatility. The Rage: Carrie 2 is essentially like what would happen if She’s All That took an unexpected turn (and Shyamalan wrote it like his current movies); imagine if Rachael Leigh Cook took off her glasses, but it turned out she had powerful telekinetic abilities the entire time.

Tamara (2005)– I know I’ve said it before, but I can’t pinpoint exactly what makes me such a big fan of this movie. I don’t know if it’s how brutal some of the stuff in here is or if it’s how silly some of the stuff in here is. Either way, I’m hooked. The first kill in this flick still makes my stomach turn, and I think that’s why I stick around; it’s not so over the top that I turn the movie off, but it’s enough to where I squirm but continue chowing down on my popcorn.

Mirror Mirror (1990)- I’ve talked about Mirror Mirror before, so I’ll keep it short (this time). It’s a female-directed and female-written horror movie. It has Karen Black. It has a rad, mirror demon who takes advantage of an honestly really cool goth loner. It’s GREAT.

Ginger Snaps (2000)– Ginger Snaps is definitely not a lesser known horror movie, but I would be remiss to not include it on this list because it’s a good, tonal match to the other flicks on this list. I’m a huge Katharine Isabelle fan, and the fact a Canadian gothic werewolves movie uses lycanthropy as a giant metaphor for puberty is sheer perfection.
