Outside of cockroaches, I’m not really bothered by creepy crawlies. However, if you throw in some good ol’ fashioned, oozing, disgusting, body horror with it, I’ll still watch it while eating popcorn, BUT I’ll be squirming the entire time. With that being said, I present to you some of my favorite, bug-centric flicks of all times. Don’t try to *worm* your way out of this one.
The Fly (1986)– Jeff Goldblum is a total babe, but if you’ve seen The Fly, you know that’s not why it’s on my list. You have Cronenberg. You have green slime and white pus oozing everywhere. You have a particularly vile dream sequence. It’s disgustingly perfect.
Slither (2006)– If you know me at all, you know how much I love this movie. It’s a beautiful send up to 1950s B Horror while also serving as a metaphor for toxic and abusive relationships. The cast is incredible. It’s gross. It’s funny where it should be and poignant where it needs to be. I’ve written about it before (shameless plug), so I won’t say too much more. Remember, it’s never a good idea to touch abandoned alien artifacts that land in the woods.
Arachnophobia (1990)– This movie has been a crowd pleaser in my house since I was a kid. It’s a solid horror comedy, and it has the same charm as The ‘Burbs that I loved growing up. It’s definitely tame compared to the others on this list, but it still makes your skin crawl, in the best way possible.
Starship Troopers (1997)– I’m a total sucker for Paul Verhoeven. I’m a huge fan of how he accurately portray anything from the sleazy underbelly of Las Vegas (Showgirls is a good movie, and I stand by that) to a futuristic battle between man and giant alien insects. It should come as no surprise in a Verhoeven movie that there’s a beautiful balance of plot, grime, and humans being disemboweled by huge bugs while all serving as a piece of war propaganda. If you give this a watch, I promise you’ll soon be saying, “Welcome to the Roughnecks!”
Creepshow (1982)– The only chapter in this movie with bugs is the one that has stuck with me since the first time I watched this movie during a Halloween movie marathon when I was nine. “They’re Creeping Up On You” gets me every, single, time. Like I mentioned earlier, the only bugs that freak me out are cockroaches, so this segment is my worst fear manifested. It’s definitely a tale of karma, and boy howdy, is it a nasty one.
