TwentyMineTeen #20: Head Over Feels

I write a lot about seeing the good in things. I talk about the bright side. I discuss the light at the end of the tunnel. Today, I want to talk about the dark for a second.

I don’t enjoy bad things happen. I don’t seek them out. I don’t relish the days I spend crying. The thing is though, you have to have the bad days.

The bad days are the ones that remind you you’re alive. They help you appreciate the good days that much more. Uncomfortable conversations have to happen to remind you we’re all human. It’s the raw part of life that helps you grow. Sometimes, you have to put yourself out there at the risk of falling so your skin is thicker the next time you try.

No family is like the Cleavers’; on the BEST days, it’s like an episode of The Osbournes. No friendship is completely peachy keen; that fruit is bruised to no end. No relationship is like “Our Song”; it’s like “Blank Space” (aka Taylor Swift’s reality.)

You have to scream and cry and talk about things before you implode. Life can’t be all rainbows and sunshine. If it was, you wouldn’t be able to value the rainbows and the sunshine. You have to have a balance to grow as a human.

You can’t bury everything under the earth; you gotta let it sprout out of the dirt. You have to talk about the bad things. You can’t avoid things because you’re scared of falling. You can’t lock yourself away in a room somewhere.

You have to let yourself feel. If you pretend everything is constantly fine, you won’t be able to put yourself back together when you break. Be genuine. Be raw. Be brave.

(And yes ABC Family, you can steal that tagline.)
