TwentyMineTeen #4: Shift Happens

Today’s entry is going to be short and sweet but not without meaning. Here goes.

I worked a double to help a friend in need. They’ve been there for me a lot over the years, and I wouldn’t have gotten my sweet scruff boy without them. I don’t say what I did for recognition or acclaim; I only mention it as part of this story. I digress.

I usually use public transportation to get to and from work because the bus stop is only a 20 minute walk from my apartment, so it’s super easy and convenient. Well tonight, I was so tired that envisioning the 20 minute walk home was almost bringing me to tears. I hated doing it, but I crafted a Facebook post to see if anyone was willing to give me a ride. I had all but given up when I got a notification from Uber saying I had earned a $1 ride.

Now dear readers, I am broke as all get out. I have to watch every little bit I spend because I work in the service industry, and every penny is irreplaceable. Tonight, I couldn’t afford a ride share, and it was far too late to reach out to anyone for a ride directly, hence the Facebook post, so I took a deep breath, clocked out, and walked out the door, with every intention of taking the bus and proceeding with the trek home.

The aforementioned Uber notification popped up on my phone as soon as I left work. No joke. No exaggeration. My phone lit up as soon as my shoe hit the pavement. Then, as my Uber arrived, a friend texted me to ask if I had found a ride because if not, they could come get me.

The moral of this story isn’t to make me a martyr or to present a holier than thou attitude. If it appears that way, I can assure you it isn’t my intention. The moral of this story is to remind you good karma is out there when you least expect it. I didn’t take an extra shift tonight to get any praise; I took it to help a friend, with no ulterior motives, and the universe looked out for me. Instead of getting home an hour to an hour and a half after I got off, I was home in 10 minutes. That’s how I know I did the right thing today, and that’s why I’m encouraging you to do the same.

Help out someone when you can without expecting anything in return. I promise you the universe will reward you. Sometimes it’s instantaneous like tonight; other times, it takes a while. Regardless, just know something good will happen down the line, and more importantly, you’re letting something good happen right now. There is enough hate in this world. Why not show that some good is still out there, yeah?
